Computer Literature Index

The Computer Literature Index offers many computer publications in various media, from books to dvds. The subjects covered are varied, however all are computer related, from how computers work to dictionaries of computers and computer terms. We also have computer literature covering computer programing, computer networks and computer science. The history of computers as-well as the future of computers.

 

 

Use of The Computer Literature Index website is free. You do not need to login or otherwise be a member of the site to order and view the computer literature available. Below are listed some basic and popular computer-related terms that sometimes confuse new-comers to computers.

Popular Computer Terms

  • Bit - A bit is a binary unit of storage data that can either a value of 0 or 1.
  • Byte - 8 bits of data which has a possible value from 0 to 255.
  • Bios – The bios or Basic Input/Output System is a low level program, basic operating system.
  • Boot – When a computer is turned on it goes through a “boot” process, the system detects hardware etc.
  • Cd / Dvd - A flat circular disk that is used to store files and media.
  • Cd-rom / Cd burner / Dvd-rom / Dvd burner - A disk drive that is used to play and burn cds / dvds.
  • Crash - A term that is used for when a computer system fails, either due to hardware or software malfunction, this “Crash” will result in the system restarting, turning off or causing it to become unusable.
  • Driver - A software program used to communicate with hardware devices.
  • File – Single piece of data stored on the hard drive or removable media.
  • Firmware - Software embedded in hardware devices.
  • Floppy disk – An old style of media with low capacity of storage.
  • Floppy Drive – A hardware component that was once used to read the floppy disk.
  • Hardware – The term “hardware” is used to describe the physical components of a computer system.
  • Internet – International Network, connected via servers located in data centers around the world.
  • ISP – An Internet Service Provider (ISP) provides Internet services for individuals and businesses.
  • MIME - Multipurpose internet mail extension.
  • Memory – Computer Memory or RAM (Random Access Memory) is used to store temporary information.
  • Network – Is a the term used to describe the communication between two or more computers.
  • Operating System - The operating system is the main or base software that the computer needs to operate properly, run applications and be user friendly.
  • Parallel - Data transmission, where data is sent from more than one line at a time.
  • Serial - Data transmission, where data is sent on a single line.
  • Software – Software is used to run on top of the operating system, software can applications, games, etc.
  • Spam – The term “spam” is used to describe junk and unsolicited information and communications.
  • Storage Media – Can be permanent or temporary media used to store files. Examples are hard drives, flash drives, cd and dvd discs.
  • URL - Uniform Resource Locator is the technical term to describe an Internet “Link” or web address.
  • Virus – A malicious piece of software created to harm your operating system, gather your information or otherwise compromise your security.
  • Worm – Like a virus a worm is a self-replicating malware computer program.
